History

Summer Kampers has been in existence for 9 years under the direction of Jody Fisher in Ann Arbor. The program began with 71 students in a 4 week program offering a flexible Enrichment program and a field-trip-a-day Escape program. It was both profitable and successful from its first year, and expanded to several weeks throughout the summer to meet customer demand.

One of the most popular Enrichment classes was “A Week at Hogwarts”. In this hour and fifteen minute class, students would experience a hands on lesson based on classes from the popular Harry Potter series. This class always filled up quickly, and Jody usually opened up multiple sections to accommodate all interested students. in 2001, we offered an entire week dedicated to this concept, “A Very Special Week at Hogwarts.” For this full time, week long experience, the facility becomes a “set” with props on loan from teachers’ homes, including oriental rugs, homemade tapestries, and authentic antique props, most quite ecclectic. Teachers became “professors” of Potions, Divinations and the like, and students became witches and wizards. When entering the word of Hogwarts at Summer Kampers, beware: "Muggles will not be tolerated!" Kampers have loved the atmosphere, special effects and the over-the-top attention to detail since our first year. It was an instant hit, and has been going strong ever since.

In 2006, Jody initiated “Academic Camps”. This program offers academic immersion in the mornings and well thought out and entertaining activities in the afternoons. Each week, a different academic subject is offered, such as Mathematics, an emphasis on an aspect of Language Arts or Science. Students are assessed Monday morning. Experienced teachers work with them in the subject area throughout the week in the mornings, and they are reassessed to determine progress on Friday. Parents look forward to a week of academic advancement, while students look forward to their fun afternoon activities.
